November 2024 Update

As we find ourselves midway through November - and still cutting grass due to some astonishingly mild weather so far - we’re looking ahead to the early months of next year and what jobs this ‘delayed’ winter will bring.

Currently the dropping leaves are keeping us busy, most frequently being shredded and deposited in designated composting areas on our sites. This not only keeps our green areas around Bath immaculate, but provides a valuable resource come spring which would otherwise have an environmental and financial impact if removed and disposed of away from these sites.

We’re still being kept busy cutting the appropriate hedges, and with such a packed schedule working around the nesting season we frequently find ourselves using the wetter days to trim and chip the hedges where we can. It’s been a pleasure to work alongside a local school, as well as see the impact our routine hedge maintenance has had on several new sites this year.

Grass-wise perhaps a new record of cutting into December? Growth has definitely slowed but certainly not stopped yet, and we’ve found the addition of a Scag pedestrian mower for our steeper sites incredibly useful; allowing us to continue cutting with the minimum disruption in our schedule or the ground surface itself, even if the conditions aren’t optimal.

We’ve had some use out of the 22t petrol log splitter, although it must be said that with the garden / green space side of the business requiring so much attention through autumn and into winter, little time has been devoted to hiring out our machine / operator combination - although our collective attention will no doubt be on cost effective and renewable winter fuel when the temperatures begin to drop.

On top of this our landscaping projects continue in earnest; finishing off a porcelain patio in Combe Down, rebuilding sleeper beds and ground preparation for turf in spring in Bathampton, and looking ahead to creating a low maintenance stone path with sleeper steps in Batheaston towards the end of the month.
